Saim Sadiq’s Joyland became the first feature film out of Pakistan to make its way into the 75th edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2022. This film is a hope for other Pakistani film makers for whom the doors have now been opened.
Before the premiere, the cast, which includes two of the big names of Pakistan, Sania Saeed and Sarwat Gilani joined Alina Khan, Rasti Farooq, Salmaan Peerzada, Sohail Sameer and Ali Junejo for the photocall.
Synopsis: As the Ranas – a happily patriarchal joint family – yearn for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line, their youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious trans starlet. Their impossible love story slowly illuminates the entire Rana family’s desire for a sexual rebellion.
The movie got a 10 minute standing ovation, showing that the audience loved the movie and gave it a positive feedback.
Hopefully we will see more Pakistani movies getting their premieres in Cannes Film Festival including other well known film festivals around the world.
