THE ROAD CALLED LIFE. FILM REVIEW. 9TH LONDON KOREAN FILM FESTIVAL 2014.

The animation feature The Road Called Life was shown in the K-Animation section of the 9th London Korean Film Festival 2014. It consisted of three traditional stories shown each in 30 minutes duration. The three stories have been recreated as animation and are considered to be the best written pieces of Korean representative short novels in the 20th century. Each story has a poetic, comical and a very strong emotional element to it.

Directed by  Ahn Jae-Hoon and Han Hye-Jin, who previously directed ‘Green Days’ have very beautifully recreated the short novels into short animated features in The Road Called Life. Taken from three different short novels: ‘When Buckwheat Flowers will Bloom’, ‘Spring, Spring’ and ‘A Lucky Day’, they touch lives of different people in a very diverse way, and deal with the human emotions of love, happiness, nostalgia and tragedy.

When buckwheat flowers will bloom

In ‘When Buckwheat Flowers will Bloom’, an old man reminisces about his love in the past, and shares it with a friend and a young man whom they meet on the way to another city. This short feature had a very nostalgic touch to it, and dealt with the human emotion of love and longing.

The Road called Life leader spring spring

In ‘Spring, Spring’, a man is settled with his future in-laws, and is promised by his father-in-law to be married to his daughter. The father-in-law has different plans while the man tries hard for his marriage. This short feature had a very comical element to it, and described the feeling of a man for a woman in a very funny way.

A lucky day

In ‘A Lucky Day’, a very poverty stricken man, making his earning while pulling a rickshaw spends a very prosperous day in a very cold day, only to return home with an unexpected turn of events. This short feature goes deep into the lives of very poor people, and touches the extreme misery which a large part of a forgotten and ignored society goes through.

‘The Road Called Life’, was first shown in the Opening Gala of the Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival, and has since been shown in numerous other film festivals around the world.
