‘BIRDMAN’ 2014. FILM REVIEW.
Director Alejandro G. Inarritu is like a breath of fresh air in Hollywood. Very few Hollywood films come out now that are very unique and have the ability of capturing an audience. This film has a cast of very famous names in Hollywood, both old and new. Having a dark theme to it, the film constantly changes its momentum and delves into different characters each having their own personalities. The Director has presented the psychology of each character in such a detailed fashion, that anyone can relate themselves to them.
If you think that there would be Birdman in this film that would go around fighting and smashing its enemy into pieces like well-known Comic characters, then you’re wrong. You see, this is the beauty of this film. It takes a character from the Comics, and then shows its inner and true personality. Birdman has a reality hidden inside it. It shows itself to be strong, but at the same time is very week. It is fighting its inner self and is trying to find a place where it can fit-in in a very bizarre world of misunderstandings and make belief. The characters he comes across constantly remind him of his own weakness as he tries to deal with them. He has a daughter, a friend, people who are working for him and then the public to whom he has to prove that he is still powerful and successful.
The film seems to be shot in a one long take which to be honest has been done before, nothing new to it, but, the way it has been executed is very unique. Alejandro G. Inarritu’s rigorous style of filmmaking made the actors continuously act out 15 pages of dialogue to its perfection. Michael Keaton plays the role of Riggan, formerly known as the Birdman, is trying to make it big in the Broadway by doing a debut show in theatre. Edward Norton finds it hard to get into the role that has been given to him for the Broadway play. Naomi Watts tries to adjust between two men who praise her constantly. Zach Galfianikas works hard to get the Broadway play going. Emma Stone has constant arguments with her father, and keeps herself distant from everyone; while Andrea Riseborough searches for the recognition she deserves.
Ever since its release, the film has gone to win 138 awards including 9 Oscar Nominations.
