Pakistan’s drama industry is putting up a spectacular show right before 2019 is moving towards a glorious end. A plethora of productions have taken over our T.V screens and drama-buffs are enjoying their chilly weeks, chockfull of entertainment.
The battle of ratings amongst leading television channels has turned even more aggressive. Even the audience is torn-apart to watch drama to tune to. After all, almost every prime-time show is offering strong content while boasting a cast of top industry stalwarts in its wake.
But much to our glee, it is the weekends that are the most loaded with entertainment! Some of the best quality scripts, helmed by premier directors have blessed our nights from Friday to Saturday and we couldn’t be happier!
It has been a bumper week yet again. Let’s take a quick review of what has happened in our favorite dramas so far.
Sometimes an immersive drama is all you need to binge-on and fortunately, Meray Pass Tum Ho delivers. Director Nadeem Baig and writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar have achieved a hit, with the whole country addicted to this masterpiece.
The two titans Humayun Saeed as Danish and Adnan Siddiqui as Shahwar are spectacular in their characters. It seems like Ayeza Khan was made to play the role of the stone-hearted and cold Mehwish.
This weekend’s episode gives us a glimpse into a more intense battleground that has ensued between the three characters.
Despite living with Shahwar, we see Mehwish being transformed into a more vengeful and bitter woman. She is missing her son Rumi and has decided that she will take Danish to court to seize custody of their child.
Meanwhile, Shahwar has been making it clear to Mehwish that he wishes her to focus on being his lover instead of turning into a doting mother.
Danish, broken and dejected, realizes that he is bound to lose custody of Rumi if Shahwar’s powerful lawyers challenge him in court.
Hania, played by Hira Mani, has added a softness to the plot. Danish has found a comforting friend in her and we are yet to see how their relationship evolves into a more intense one in the upcoming episodes.
Next week’s promo shows Danish rising against Shahwar, with Rumi motivating him to remain strong in all circumstances!
Intelligent, entertaining and soul-stirring, Haseeb Hassan‘s Alif is flying-high with every passing episode. Hamza Ali Abbasi couldn’t have been better for the role of Qalb-e-Momin and is delivering the restlessness of his character to his best.
The drama has taken a rapid change of events after Jehangir’s death. A restive Momina (Sajal Aly) returns to acting to pay off her family’s excessive debt but is surprised to see the return of her old-flame, Faisal (Osman Khalid Butt).
Meanwhile, Momin flies to Turkey to visit his grandfather (Manzar Sehbai), but he is actually looking for peace and solace from the commotion back home. His ex-girlfriend (Sadaf Kanwal) is hungry for revenge and is determined to wreak havoc in his life.
We know more of Momin’s childhood in this episode and finally realize that his grandfather was against the marriage of his father, Taha (Ahsan Khan) and his mother, Husn-e-Jahan (Kubra Khan).
With his entertainment empire on the verge of a setback, Momin feels lost and perplexed.
The promo for next week reveals his grandfather challenging him that he will forever leave calligraphy if his grandson ever finds ultimate success in his materialistic career.
Are we about to witness Momin’s eventual downfall in the upcoming episodes? Let’s wait and watch.
If there is one drama that deserves to be launched on Netflix for the world to laud it is Ishq Zahe Naseeb. The intriguing story penned by Hashim Nadeem and directed by Farooq Rind has all the right elements of suspense, mystery, and murder.
Every episode lays out a new guessing game for the audience, unveiling a new enigma and leaving its fans on tenterhooks over the secret lives and dark past of its characters. This week’s episode dropped a massive bomb on Gauhar (Sonya Hussayn) as she discovers Sameer’s (Zahid Ahmed) reality on their wedding day.
Meanwhile, things are going downhill for Kashif (Sami Khan) and Donya (Zarnish Khan) who are having a rocky relationship, post engagement!
The promo for the next episode shows Gauhar having major difficulty recovering from her shock over Sameer’s split personality disorder.
As per the prediction of the palm reader shown at the beginning of the drama, Gauhar’s first husband will die! But how, why and when? Will he really? With these questions buzzing in our mind, Ishq Zahe Naseeb has us totally riveted!
The whole of Pakistan was excited when the ISPR production, Ehd e Wafa pulled off the biggest casting coup of the year, with powerful names like Ahad Raza Mir, Osman Khalid Butt, Wahaj Ali, Ahmed Ali Akbar, Zara Noor Abbas, and Vaneeza Ahmed.
It has a plot that paces slow and steady but offers enough to have the audience returning for more. The story of four friends is progressing further in their personal and professional lives. It seems the clash between Saad (Ahad Raza Mir) and Shahzain (Osman Khalid Butt) will soon end as that two college companions have expressed their desire to finally let go of their feud over Dua (Alizeh Shah).
Shehryar’s (Ahmed Ali Akbar) love equation with Masooma (Momina Iqbal) also strengthens. While all is well in the lives of Saad, Shahzain, and Shehryar; it is Shariq (Wahaj Ali) who enters into dangerous waters with his huge evidence against the death of a young boy beaten by a Pehlwan.
He feels heartbroken when the proof gets deleted from his phone and he realizes that the media along with the police force is involved in dissolving the matter forever.
Wahaj Ali stole the show in this episode, having the most scenes and performing his best as the daring Shehryar. But what we loved the most are the cute, dreamy conversations between Dua and Saad. Their adorable chemistry is hard to resist. The goofball Gulzar ( (Adnan Samad Khan), makes us laugh even more at his hilarious quips and is turning into the most favorite character of all in the drama.
With an unhurried storyline, Ehd e Wafa is sweet and gentle! Next week, romance will be in the air as the four friends will delve deeper into their love lives. But is this all a calm before the storm? We have our fingers crossed!
With seven episodes down, Ruswai is carefully discussing the plight of a rape survivor in our society. We see Dr. Sameera (Sana Javed) strongly dealing with the trauma after her sexual assault, with her husband, Salman (Mikaal Zulfiqar) vying hard to silence her.
There is anger welled up inside Sameera and we see her channeling her rage out on her father. She accuses him of not guarding his daughter well enough from the goons at the unfortunate night.
But at the same time, she is determined to rise out of the ashes! She wants justice and is eager to soar again, only to find her parents and husband’s shallow behavior becoming a mighty hindrance in her path.
Episode eight gives us a glimpse at Salman threatening her to remain silent over the matter, else he will break the marriage.
Directed by Rubina Ashraf, Ruswai is clearly not an easy watch for all viewers. It has deep pain etched in its plot but voices a truth we as a society always try hard to shun. Sameera’s journey to justice will not be easy, but definitely something our audience needs to hear!
Other than these top five dramas, stories like Hum TV’s Yeh Dil Mera featuring Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Ali, Kahin Deep Jalay on Geo Entertainment starring Neelum Munir and Imran Ashraf, Daasi on Hum TV with its cast of Mawra Hocane and Adeel Hussain, Ary Digital’s Thora Sa Haq showcasing Imran Abbas and Ayeza Khan, are also gaining competition and developing fan base.
